International Madrid Registry and Protocol

The Madrid Protocol is an international agreement that streamlines the registration of trademarks across multiple countries through a single centralized procedure managed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). This system, known as the Madrid System, enables trademark applicants to obtain protection in several treaty member countries without the need to file separate applications with each of the intellectual property offices in those countries.

The process begins with a registration application filed with the intellectual property office of the applicant’s home country. In this case, PROPIMEX serves as the originating office, acting as the Mexican Institute of intellectual property (IMPI), responsible for receiving and processing trademark registration applications.

Once the trademark has been registered in the home office, the applicant can file an international application through the Madrid System. WIPO receives and examines the international application, and if it meets the requirements, it forwards the application to the offices of the countries designated by the applicant.

PROPIMEX’s team of lawyers is trained to advise and assist applicants throughout the international trademark registration process. From filing the application with IMPI to managing the international application at WIPO and its subsequent processing in the designated countries’ offices, PROPIMEX’s legal team simplifies and expedites the process, reducing costs and ensuring effective trademark protection in multiple countries.

In summary, the Madrid Protocol is a powerful tool for international trademark protection, and the legal guidance and support provided by PROPIMEX are essential for those looking to expand their trademark beyond the borders of their home country.
