A patent is an exclusive right granted to an inventor to protect an invention, which allows the holder to have sole control over the commercial exploitation of the invention for a limited period, typically 20 years. Patents encourage innovation by ensuring economic benefits to inventors and companies in exchange for publicly disclosing the details of the invention. These are processed through the Mexican Institute of intellectual property (IMPI).
